Yesterday I wrote that having a great business reputation leads to more profits. I said today we would talk about practical ways to develop your business reputation. However, I’ll write about that next week. I think I should first lay down two principles before giving practical tips.

Great Content

I know. You already know about great content. Content is king. Yada, yada, yada. But it’s always good to be reminded about content.

Content is what people talk about. You can be the best marketer, but if your content is mediocre, your business will suffer long-term. Content is what you have to offer. Content is the foundation of any online site. You can have the best product or service but if you content sucks, your sales conversion rate will be horrible. Always evaluate your content. How can you make it better? More importantly, how can you differentiate your content from your competitors?

Great Promotion

Promotion (or marketing) is where many internet business people drop the ball.

You can’t spend all of your time producing content for your site. You need to interact with other sites to get noticed. It’s hard to build a online business reputation if no one knows about you. The “build it they will come model” is overrated. You need to build it and promote it, and then they will come.

Most well-known products were built on a intentional marketing campaign. Think of Nike. Are their shoes really that great? Or are they selling millions of shoes because they market with high profile athletes?

Ask any blogger with many RSS subscribers about marketing, and I bet he’ll tell you it’s a vital part of his blogging success Most high profile bloggers I know of promote their blog well, whether it’s marketing to other bloggers or using social media sites.

If you lack the motivation to promote your site, realize there are mediocre sites getting more traffic than your quality site. You’re being “out-marketed.” Marketing is so important that you should produce less content to free up time for marketing. I see webmasters with great content giving up because of low traffic. But if they would spend less time producing content and more time marketing, they would increase their traffic exponentially.

Conclusion

Content is king, but without promotion it may not ascend the throne.

Content and promotion go hand in hand. You need both to build a great business reputation. Your reputation is based on your content and how well your promote it. Work on these two things and you’ll be on your way to building a great business reputation.

Where do you spend most of your time, creating content or promoting your site? How can keep from neglecting one or the other?
